À travers ce mémoire, nous souhaitons mettre en lumière la manière dont les infirmières et les infirmiers perçoivent leur profession, ayant été sujette à de grands changements et à de multiples remaniements au cours des derniers siècles. Issue du travail bénévole des femmes, les hommes font aujourd’hui partie intégrante de la population infirmière bien que les femmes en représentent toujours la très grande majorité. Les besoins et les attentes autour du rôle des infirmières se sont transformés à travers le temps et continuent d’évoluer ; la santé est devenue un secteur lucratif et l’organisation du travail doit être constamment réadaptée afin de répondre aux impératifs de coûts, de rentabilité et d’efficacité. Nous avons décidé, à travers cette recherche, de donner la parole aux infirmières et aux infirmiers en les plaçant au centre de notre problématique — à l’instar de leur rôle quotidien, central, dans le système de santé québécois. Nous souhaitons étudier leur perception des impacts des restructurations du système de santé sur leur pratique quotidienne et sur leur relation d’aide, avec les patients, au coeur de leur profession. Nous avons constaté que, malgré les nombreux efforts déjà fournis, le système de santé est toujours problématique et continue de fonctionner à flux tendu.
