Parmi les sources potentielles d'énergie, la biomasse pourrait constituer 25 % de nos besoins énergétiques pour les transports, sous réserve du développement de procédés performants permettant sa valorisation. Parmi les voies possibles, la valorisation par production d'H2 et CO qui peuvent être utilisés, sous conditions, pour la synthèse de biocarburants, semble être scientifiquement et économiquement prometteuse. Cet objectif peut être atteint en utilisant des réactions de thermolyse mais la production de goudrons constitue le principal obstacle à ce procédé et il est nécessaire de pousser les études dans ce domaine afin de limiter ou d'inhiber leur formation. La technique SPME (Micro Extraction en Phase Solide) est l'outil de prélèvement que nous avons décidé d'optimiser pour le dosage des HAP. Cette technique a été testée en zones peu polluées au Québec et au Svalbard. Ces études ont montré l'efficacité de la SPME à des concentrations très faibles et ont permis d'identifier des sources locales de COSV, comme par exemple l'utilisation des motoneiges par les autochtones. Enfin, la dernière partie du travail de thèse a porté sur l'application de la SPME lors des réactions de pyrolyse de la biomasse.
