Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Tämä tutkimus käsittelee New Yorkin kaupungin slummia 1800-luvun viimeisellä vuosikymmenellä. Työssä tarkastellaan New Yorkin kaupungin slummiutumisen ja asuinolojen taustoja sekä aikakauden käsitystä köyhyydestä. Tämän lisäksi tutkimus peilaa slummia viihteen ja eksotiikan näkökulmasta, slummiturismiksi kutsutun ilmiön kautta. Tästä näkökulmasta tutkimus käsittelee myös kaupungin siirtolaishistoriaa kyseisenä ajankohtana. Tutkimuksen päälähteenä on käytetty vuonna 1890 julkaistua Jacob Riisin kirjaa How the Other Half Lives – Studies among the Tenements of New York. Erityisesti Riisin käsitykset edellä mainituista teemoista, ovat tutkimuksen keskiössä.
\n
\nTutkimusmetodina tutkimuksessa on käytetty katseen käsitettä, minkä avulla on eroteltu erilaisia tapoja nähdä ja kokea slummi 1800-luvun lopulla. How the Other Half Livesin tekstin lisäksi kirjan kuvitus on keskeinen osa tutkimuksen lähdeaineistoa. Muita alkuperäislähteitä ovat Jacob Riisin elämänkerta, kirja The Dangerous Classes of New York sekä sanomalehtiartikkelit, joita on hyödynnetty niin laadullisesti kuin määrällisesti.
\n
\nTutkimus osoittaa, kuinka Riisin käsitys köyhyydestä oli hyvin ajan hengen mukainen. Riisin valokuvien kriittinen tarkastelu puolestaan asettaa monelta kohdin kyseenalaiseksi niiden oletetun ”autenttisuuden”. Erityinen huomio tutkimuksessa kohdistuu kaupungin uusiin siirtolaisryhmiin.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
