Abstract
Dans les années 1830, le Haut et le Bas-Canada ont connu une longue période de crise politique qui a mené aux rébellions de 1837-1838. Cette crise politique a eu lieu dans les deux colonies britanniques en même temps et dans des contextes apparentés. Cependant, l’historiographie tend à les examiner de manière cloisonnée : la rébellion du Bas-Canada et celle du Haut-Canada. Depuis plus de vingt ans, toutefois, certains auteurs proposent de réévaluer notre interprétation de ces évènements et d’y voir plutôt une seule et unique rébellion canadienne. Ce mémoire s’intéresse aux liens entres les rebelles des deux Canadas durant les années 1830 afin de déterminer l’exactitude d’une telle vision des choses. En examinant les contacts, la concordance, la coopération tactique et la tendance de ces rebelles à concevoir leur lutte dans le contexte d’un objectif commun, ce mémoire conclu que ces interrelations n’ont pas été suffisamment importantes et constantes pour parler d’une véritable unicité de l’insurrection. Les rebelles ont fait preuve d’une coopération intermittente et complexe, mais n’ont jamais œuvré dans le contexte d’un objectif ou d’un projet commun.
