Nesse trabalho são avaliadas tendências de indicadores de extremos climáticos de temperatura do ar e precipitação no clima presente (1961-1990) sobre a América do Sul, calculados a partir do aninhamento do modelo regional Eta-20km a três modelos globais: HadGEM2-ES (Hadley Center), MIROC5 (Model for interdisciplinary Research) e CanESM2 (Canadian Earth System Model). Os indicadores anuais utilizados são: TN10p (noites frias), TX10p (dias frios), TN90p (noites quentes), TX90p (dias quentes), TNn (menor temperatura mínima), TXn (menor temperatura máxima), PRCPTOT (total pluviométrico), CDD (dias secos consecutivos), R95p (chuvas intensas), R99p (chuvas muito intensas), RX1day (máximo acumulado de chuva em 1 dia) e RX5day (máximo acumulado de chuva em 5 dias consecutivos). Os resultados das simulações são confrontados com as tendências obtidas a partir de dados observacionais. O objetivo é investigar se o modelo Eta-20km, aninhado aos modelos globais, representa adequadamente tais tendências observadas no clima presente, de forma a apoiar a utilização de suas projeções futuras. Os resultados evidenciam corretamente a tendência de aquecimento em toda a América do Sul, com redução (aumento) da frequência de ocorrência de dias frios (quentes). Assim como observado, o Eta-CanESM2 e o Eta-HadGEM2-ES apresentam maiores magnitudes para as tendências dos indicadores baseados na temperatura mínima (TN10p e TN90p) quando comparado aos baseados na temperatura máxima (TX10p e TX90p). As tendências observadas nos extremos de precipitação (R95p, R99p, RX1day e RX5day) mostram em geral que a América do Sul está se tornando mais úmida, principalmente no Sudeste da América do Sul e Amazônia, contudo ocorre redução da precipitação no leste da Amazônia e Nordeste do Brasil. O Eta-HadGEM2-ES é o que melhor representa tais tendências nos extremos de precipitação, apesar de nenhuma das simulações conseguir representar adequadamente a tendência de um clima mais seco no Nordeste do Brasil. As observações mostram um aumento de CDD na maior parte da América do Sul. Tal aspecto é melhor representado nas regiões Sudeste e Nordeste do Brasil por todas as simulações.
