Abstract
In Nederland nam het aantal gemotoriseerde voertuigen na 1950 exponentieel toe. De verkeersveiligheid kwam hier sterk onder te lijden. Het aantal verkeersdoden nam ieder jaar met honderd doden toe, tot aan het piekjaar in 1972 toen er ruim 3200 doden vielen in het verkeer. De Nederlandse overheid gaf in de loop van de jaren 1960 steeds meer aandacht aan de problemen die ontstonden door de massamotorisering. Toch was er een verandering in het overheidsbeleid na 1972. In deze scriptie wordt onderzocht hoe het veranderende regeringsbeleid invloed had op de verkeersveiligheid. Dit wordt onderzocht door middel van een analyse van het overheidsbeleid en de verkeerveiligheidsstatistieken. Daaruit blijkt dat het regeringsbeleid zich in de jaren 1970 minder richtte op het faciliteren van de automobilist en steeds meer op het stimuleren van het gebruik van de fiets en het openbaar vervoer. Uit verkeersveiligheidsstatistieken blijkt dat de verbetering van de verkeersveiligheid in eerste instantie in sterkere mate voor de automobilisten gold. Pas nadat de overheid in de loop van de jaren 1970 het autogebruik probeerde te beperken, is te zien dat de verbetering van de verkeersveiligheid in sterkere mate ook ten bate was van de fietsgebruikers.
