Face à un monde en mutation, marqué par les aléas naturels amplifiés par les changements climatiques, les risques anthropiques et technologiques croissants, ce mémoire explore comment le design peut devenir un outil stratégique pour renforcer la résilience des communautés. En combinant une analyse historique de la sécurité civile, des analyses de projets et des concepts clés, tels que la polyvalence, l’accessibilité, le capital social, les tiers lieux et la résilience communautaire, cette recherche propose une approche innovante, intégrée et systémique pour gérer les risques. Le design, parfois perçu à travers le prisme esthétique ou fonctionnel, est ici examiné comme un levier pour concevoir des solutions adaptatives, durables et centrées sur les usagers pour améliorer la résilience des communautés. Le mémoire s’appuie sur le contexte canadien et des exemples internationaux pour démontrer que les designers, par leur capacité à anticiper et à innover, peuvent jouer un rôle clé à toutes les étapes de la gestion des risques. À travers l’analyse de projets polyvalents et un fondement théorique soutenu, il est possible d'illustrer comment les communautés peuvent mieux se préparer à l’incertitude et renforcer leur capacité de réponse face aux crises.
