Goytisolo & Barral, Literary Bridges Between Latin America and Italy

Abstract
This article explains how some of the most representative authors of the Latin American literary boom became part of the Italian literary and publishing world. This phenomenon was thanks, in part, to the connections established by members of the so-called Escuela de Barcelona (Carlos Barral, José Agustín Goytisolo and Josep Maria Castellet) with the most important Italian editors at the time. The article focuses on the 1950s and 1960s, decades in which these authors gradually began to make themselves known in Italy. From Barcelona, Barral, Goytisolo and Castellet, were the first to establish close contacts with Italo Calvino and Giulio Einaudi. The constant dialogue between Barral and Calvino facilitated the ‘penetration’ of the latest work coming from Latin America into the Italian literary world. Moreover, one should not forget the important work of the publisher Giangiacomo Feltrinelli in this regard. He was undoubtedly the editor who published most of the Latin American literature in Italy during that period.
