Os resultados de algumas investigações mostram que as vítimas de acontecimentos traumáticos, como é o caso da traição, podem desenvolver sensações de contaminação mental que podem estar na origem alguns tipos de Perturbação Obsessiva-Compulsiva (POC). A presente investigação teve como objetivo a indução experimental da sensação de contaminação mental através da recordação de uma situação em que o participante foi vítima de uma traição de tipo infidelidade. Participaram no estudo 40 estudantes universitários, com idades compreendidas entre os 18 e os 57 anos. Os participantes responderam aos seguintes instrumentos: um questionário de dados sociodemográficos, a Escala de Afetos Positivos e Negativos, o Inventário de Obsessões e Compulsões de Vancouver, a Escala de Sensibilidade à Contaminação e a Escala de Desejabilidade Social. Os sujeitos foram aleatoriamente atribuídos a duas condições experimentais. Foi solicitado aos participantes da condição experimental que recordassem e descrevessem uma situação onde se tivessem sentido traídos e aos participantes do grupo de controlo que descrevessem uma situação neutra. Após a tarefa, foi realizada uma pausa de 5 minutos e seguidamente responderam a uma entrevista final acerca das emoções experimentadas e os seus comportamentos durante a pausa. Os resultados mostraram que os indivíduos da condição experimental tiveram significativamente mais sentimentos de sujidade e nojo em relação ao perpetrador da traição e um maior afeto negativo após a manipulação experimental do que os participantes da condição de controlo. No entanto, apenas um número reduzido de participantes recorreu a comportamentos de lavagem e de neutralização. Os resultados encontrados permitem concluir que a recordação de uma história de traição idiossincrática de tipo infidelidade produz sensações e comportamentos de contaminação mental.
