Sous forme de longs fragments écrits à la première personne, La banalité d’un tir raconte l’histoire tragique de la disparition d’un père et les conséquences de celle-ci sur Ana, sa fille aînée. Du jour au lendemain, Ale disparaît dans son pays natal, la Colombie. Les autorités sont prévenues, mais l’enquête bouge à peine : il n’est qu’un parmi tant d’autres. Au Canada, Ana doit composer avec un deuil violent qui ne peut pas s’achever. Elle a beau avoir grandi entre le Québec et la Colombie, rien dans son identité nord-américaine ne l’avait préparée à faire face à cette nouvelle réalité qui s’est abattue sur sa famille. La honte et le deuil sont les thèmes centraux de ce récit autobiographique qui tente de montrer sans expliquer l’expérience de la vie entre les mondes. La mise en mots de l’entre-deux mondes tente une analyse de l’impact d’une identité métisse sur le processus d’écriture. Comment fait-on pour traduire par l’écriture l’expérience de ce double univers, cet entre-deux créé par la cohabitation intérieure de deux mondes? La recherche de définitions s’amorce par un besoin de définir ce territoire métaphorique pour ensuite s’intéresser à l’identité plurielle (métissage) ainsi qu’aux effets du trilinguisme et du biculturalisme sur l’écriture.
