Le cannabis est utilisé depuis l'antiquité pour ses propriétés thérapeutiques mais son usage largement répandu a conduit à de nombreux cas de toxicomanie. Les avancées pharmacologiques ont permis d'identifier et d'isoler le principal actif de la plante, le tétra-hydrocannabinol. Les scientifiques multiplièrent alors les expérimentations afin de connaître son mode d action. Les études ont montré que les cannabinoïdes semblaient efficaces dans le traitement de douleurs chroniques. C est pourquoi certains pays tels que les pays bas ou le canada en autorisent son utilisation thérapeutique. Mais celle-ci reste encore sujet à controverse dans de nombreux pays, comme en France. C est pourquoi il est important de différencier l utilisation thérapeutique du cannabis de celui de ses principes actifs commercialisés sous forme de spécialités, tant sur l efficacité que sur ses effets indésirables Les études réalisées avec les spécialités déjà mises sur le marché sont encourageantes et il serait intéressant de voire se développer d autres études afin d étudier plus amplement le potentiel antalgique voire co-antalgique des cannabinoïdes.
