Abstract
Stupéfiante de vitesse et de précision, la performance de Nathalie Enterline au twirling bâton dénote une grande maîtrise de l’espace où la danseuse américaine évolue depuis son tout jeune âge. Née à Milton, Pennsylvanie, en 1965, Nathalie fréquente tout naturellement deux établissements dirigés par ses parents : l’Enterline Performing Arts Center à Milton et une compagnie, le Williamsport Civic Ballet. Son entraînement à la technique du twirling bâton vient en plus, comme un jeu ou un défi personnel… qui lui vaudra en 1978 de remporter le championnat du monde de la discipline dans sa catégorie, tout en poursuivant sa formation de danseuse au New York School of Ballet. Sa souplesse et sa parfaite aisance corporelle donnent à sa prestation d’une discipline, à l’origine sportive, une dimension artistique qu’elle va s’attacher à développer. Tout particulièrement après sa rencontre avec le mythique jongleur allemand Francis Brunn (1922-2004) lors d’une démonstration à Montréal en 1980. Son destin de jongleuse est scellé. C’est comme assistante et partenaire de Francis Brunn qu’elle se produit pour la première fois en 1983 sur une piste de cirque, celle du Big Apple Circus. Encouragée par son directeur Paul Binder, elle se présente au Festival mondial du cirque de demain à Paris en janvier 1984 et y remporte une médaille d’or. La jongleuse virtuose voit alors s’ouvrir les portes des cabarets et des cirques les plus prestigieux, de la Suède au Mexique, de la Russie au Canada, seule en piste avec sa canne et son chapeau.
