L’interculturel, apparu au Québec à la fin des années 1960, est aujourd’hui présent tant dans les discours populaires et médiatiques, les pratiques individuelles et organisationnelles que dans les politiques. Si le concept est utilisé dans plusieurs disciplines, on le rattache souvent aux migrations, voire aux personnes qui y sont associées. En travail social, l’approche interculturelle est pensée tantôt comme une démarche permettant de rapprocher les individus porteurs de cultures différentes, tantôt comme un contexte à prendre en considération pour l’intervention. Malgré les confusions possibles entre les différents sens et termes associés à l’interculturel, plusieurs organismes communautaires s’y réfèrent toujours afin d’intervenir auprès de la population diversifiée de Montréal. Grâce aux données recueillies par deux entretiens de groupe et huit entretiens individuels, cette recherche explore comment les intervenant.e.s des organismes communautaires de Montréal se représentent et appliquent l’approche interculturelle au quotidien. À partir des enjeux soulevés dans leurs propos, notamment l’étiquetage, l’essentialisation et le tokénisme, les impacts des pratiques associées à l’interculturel sur les personnes qui fréquentent les organismes communautaires, comme sur les intervenant.e.s elleux-mêmes ressortent.
