Het eind van de twintigste eeuw ziet een wijdverspreide opkomst van een ‘tijdperk van verontschuldigingen’. Dit onderzoek bekijkt deze ontwikkeling binnen de context van het multiculturalistisch systeem van Canada. Aan de hand van de casus van de High Arctic Relocation - een experiment dat is uitgevoerd door de Canadese overheid in de jaren 1950’, en de subsequente verontschuldiging die de betrokken Inuit hiervoor in 2010 hebben gekregen zal worden beargumenteerd dat er een aspect van identiteitspolitiek en contingentie benodigd is om specifieke gevallen van verontschuldigingen en diens opzet te kunnen verklaren. Dit zal gebeuren aan de hand van een vergelijkend onderzoek met andere verontschuldigingen die zijn gegeven namens de Canadese overheid onder minister-president Stephen Harper tussen 2006 en 2015. De verschillen tussen deze verontschuldigingen worden gebruikt om te beargumenteren dat binnen de context de verontschuldigingen die in Canada gedurende deze periode worden gegeven, de bestaande theorieën moeten worden verbonden aan theorieën over identiteitspolitiek en de ‘politiek van erkenning’ om een adequaat beeld van de opkomst en de omvang van het ‘tijdperk van verontschuldigingen’ in Canada te geven.
