I takt med att klimatförändringar och olika säkerhetshot blir tydligare, ställs städer som Stockholm inför nya utmaningar. Extremväder, översvämningar och ett osäkrare läge i världen gör att vi behöver tänka nytt kring hur städer planeras så att de blir mer tåliga, trygga och hållbara. I detta examensarbete undersöks om det skulle vara möjligt att bygga delar av staden under jord, som ett sätt att möta framtidens problem.Syftet med arbetet är att ta reda på hur underjordiska miljöer kan hjälpa till att öka både krisberedskap och skydd mot klimatförändringar. Särskilt fokus ligger på om viktiga delar av samhället som Regeringen och Riksdagen skulle kunna flyttas till säkra underjordiska platser i händelse av kris. Arbetet bygger på en genomgång av tidigare forskning, tre internationella exempel (Derinkuyu i Turkiet, Montreal i Kanada och Singapore), samt intervjuer med experter inom teknik, stadsplanering och hållbarhet.Resultaten visar att underjordiska stadsdelar kan ha flera fördelar: de sparar energi, skyddar mot klimatpåverkan, frigör plats ovan jord och kan anpassas för att ge bättre säkerhet. De internationella exemplen visar att det redan finns fungerande tekniska lösningar och strategier, men för att något liknande ska fungera i Sverige krävs tydliga lagar, politisk vilja och samarbete mellan olika aktörer. Även om Stockholm har bra förutsättningar i marken och infrastrukturen, saknas i dag en gemensam plan för hur underjorden kan användas.Slutsatsen är att det är tekniskt möjligt att skapa säkra underjordiska miljöer i Stockholm, men för att lyckas behövs mer forskning, försök i mindre skala och en långsiktig plan där underjorden ses som en naturlig del av framtidens stad.
