Lo scopo della presente ricerca è stato quello di valutare se e come il proprietario sia in grado di percepire lo stress del proprio cane all’interno della sala d’attesa dell’ambulatorio veterinario. A tale scopo un questionario di 18 domande è stato compilato da 45 proprietari; nel frattempo i rispettivi cani sono stati filmati per una durata di 3 minuti nella sala d’attesa. È così emerso che la maggior parte dei proprietari (60,0%) ritiene che il cane si stressi nella sala d’attesa dell’ambulatorio veterinario, mentre il 6,7% dei proprietari non sa dare un proprio parere sull’argomento. Del 40.0% dei proprietari che affermano che il proprio cane non si stressa dal veterinario o che non sa dare un parere, solo il 2,2% non riporta nessun segnale di stress. Questo indica che spesso il cane emette il segnale ma che viene mal interpretato dal proprietario. Tra i segnali riconosciuti più frequentemente dai proprietari come segnali di stress si ritrovano tremori (33,3%) e vocalizzazioni (31,1%). Valutando i video dei cani invece emerge che il segnale di stress più frequentemente emesso è l’orientarsi alla porta (91,1%) e la ricerca dell’attenzione del proprietario (91,1%). Se ne deduce che i proprietari dei cani all’interno della sala d’attesa riescono a decifrare nei propri cani i comportamenti di stress più marcati, mentre quelli più lievi non sono percepiti o non vengono associati allo stato emotivo corrispondente. I proprietari possono giocare un ruolo di fondamentale importanza per tutelare il benessere del cane, e per questo dovrebbero essere coadiuvati dal Medico Veterinario nel decifrarne il comportamento. D’altro canto il Medico Veterinario dovrebbe adottare tutti gli accorgimenti possibili per rendere la sala d’attesa dell’ambulatorio un luogo accogliente per gli animali.
