Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

\n--------------------
\nAbū ‘Ali al-Ghassānī was one of the significant authoirties of the Andalusian Hadith School. He lived in Iberian Peninsula, improving his knowledge by the lessons of the leading scholars of the era and was regarded as a competent scholar in Hadith and Arabic Language. He taught many students at the Great Mosque of Cordoba and consolidated his authority by his works, especially in the science of Hadith. His masterpiece is Taqyīd al-muhmal which he wrote after requests from his entourage. The work is consisted of a foreword, an introduction, and four chapters. In the first chapter, Ghassānī studies the names, pet names and lineages of transmitters in Saḥīḥayn, identifying their correct punctuation and pronunciation. In the second chapter, he treats mistakes in Saḥīḥayn caused by transmitters who transmitted the two books after Bukhārī and Muslim. He also analyzes a number of problems that he directly associates with Bukhārī and Muslim. In the third chapter, Ghassānī identifies Bukhārī’s muhmal (obscure) teachers, and in the fourth he identifies the Hadith transmitters who were mentioned by their nicknames in two Saḥīḥs. Taqyīd al-muhmal is probably the first book in which such different subjects were analysed all together. Also the data in the second chapter is significant as it represents one of the earliest efforts to make comparisons among different transmissions of Saḥīḥs. The book as a whole has been an important resource for many works in the science of Hadith, especially for commentaries, books of Hadith methodology and hadith transmitters.
