In alternativa alla prospettiva astorica e aproblematica con cui i testi scolastici presentano generalmente lo sviluppo scientifico, il contributo ripercorre, a scopo didattico, la storia evolutiva della teoria newtoniana della luce e dei colori, avvalendosi principalmente della minuziosa ricostruzione che ne offre Franco Giudice (2009, Lo spettro di Newton, Donzelli, Roma). Lo scopo di questa sintetica ricostruzione è duplice. In primo luogo, far emergere come il concetto di colore rappresenti per l’apprendimento un “ostacolo epistemologico” in quanto, ponendosi al crocevia di diverse discipline, si rivela fin dall’inizio un terreno irto di ostacoli che costringono Newton a rivedere la sua teoria per circa quarant’anni. In secondo luogo, evidenziare il ruolo che nella didattica gioca la ‘storia dei concetti’. Cercare di comprendere la radicalità della tesi newtoniana entrando nell’officina dello scienziato, conoscendone la formazione e le ragioni dei suoi antagonisti, può contribuire infatti a sfatare molte delle credenze ingenue proprie degli studenti favorendo al contempo lo sviluppo di epistemologie scientifiche più sofisticate.
