L’objectif de cette recherche est d’établir le portrait des théories et approches du développement de carrière mobilisées par les conseillères et conseillers d’orientation (c.o.) dans leur pratique. Peu d’études se sont attardées à ce sujet alors que plusieurs auteures et auteurs affirment que le développement des connaissances concernant les approches et théories doit refléter la mouvance dans le monde du travail. Cette recherche propose un cadre de référence qui répertorie les théories et approches en trois catégories; traditionnelles, post-modernes et intégratives. Afin d’établir la pertinence des théories et des approches, on s’intéresse à l’utilisation et la connaissance qu’en ont les c.o., et ce, en fonction de différentes catégories. De plus, des analyses seront effectuées afin de voir si cela varie en fonction de différentes variables. Pour ce faire, un questionnaire en ligne a été créé et diffusé à l’ensemble des c.o. membres de l’OCCOQ et duquel il a été possible de recueillir les réponses de 172 personnes répondantes. Le constat principal qui ressort est que les théories et approches en développement de carrière sont considérées comme étant pertinentes et aidantes. Généralement, les c.o. mobilisent une grande diversité de théories ou approches, qu’elles soient traditionnelles, post-modernes ou intégratives. Ils affirment cependant, en général, connaître davantage les approches post-modernes que traditionnelles. Les applications pratiques sont un aspect favorisant la mobilisation des construits théoriques. Peu de facteurs influent, enfin, la connaissance ou la mobilisation d’une théorie ou approche.
