En utilisant des données géographiques sur les brevets délivrés aux entreprises québécoises entre 1972 et 1989 par l'Office de la propriété intellectuelle du Canada, nous vérifions si les entreprises qui résident plus près du centre-ville de Montréal préfèrent innover de nouveaux produits et si les entreprises en périphérie innovent plutôt en procédé. Nous vérifions donc indirectement la véracité de la Théorie du cycle de vie de l'innovation, qui stipule que les entreprises déménagent du centre vers la périphérie en même temps que leur production se standardise, d'où l'association aux brevets de procédé.En contrôlant pour la taille de l'entreprise et l'appartenance à une industrie plus innovante, nous trouvons que la probabilité de breveter en procédé varie selon la distance de l'entreprise titulaire et du centre-ville de Montréal. Les couronnes contenues entre 15 et 30 km ont une propension plus importante à innover en procédé. Et ce, même si les procédés ne représentent que 16% des données. Par ailleurs, le phénomène des brevets de produit n'est pas conscrit près du centre-ville, mais plutôt au sein de la Région métropolitaine de recensement de Montréal.
