Neural mechanisms underlying social memory formation in songbirds

Abstract
Social recognition and memory are essential aspects of social behaviour; group members, competitors, offspring, and mates must all be distinguished from outsiders and each other for the maintenance of social groups. This thesis combines experiments tailored to evaluating the behavioural correlates of social memory formation and investigating manipulations of this memory formation in the Bengalese finch, Lonchura striata var. domestica. I also present a preliminary review of possible brain regions involved in the formation of this social memory. I examined the effect of repeated female presentations on males' production of courtship song to investigate behavioural correlates of social memory and the influence of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist, MK-801, on the formation of these memories. I finally investigated the expression of Early Growth Response 1 (an immediate early gene) in brain areas of interest to suggest areas for future research. Males show significant decreases in courtship production across repeated female presentations, and significantly greater decreases within multiple repeated presentations of females than across single presentations of multiple females, suggesting the formation of a short-term social memory. Subcutaneous MK-801 injections did not affect the formation of this memory, suggesting that other manipulations of NMDA receptors might be more effective for investigating this phenomenon. Finally, I found visual exposure to female conspecifics resulted in significantly more immediate early gene activation in the caudolateral nidopallium, intermediate medial mesopallium, and lateral nidopallium, areas that have been implicated in visual memory and recognition.
