Psychological factors and health related quality of life after percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty

Abstract
Little data is available on psychological factors involved in Quality of Life (QoL) after Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA). To examine the impact of alexithymia and depressive and anxious symptoms on QoL we enrolled patients undergoing a PTCA. They were assessed with the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS), the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), the state subscale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) which provides a Physical and Mental Component Score (MCS and PCS). The SF-36 was re-administered at 6 months. Sixty subjects completed the follow-up interview. Mean(SD) age was 66.3(10.4), mean(SD) GDS, STAI and TAS were respectively 3(2.6), 29.9(9.8), and 48.7(12,1), mean(SD) follow-up PCS and MCS were 43.7(9.4) and 48.1(13.1). Baseline TAS and STAI were correlated with 6 months PCS score (p<0.05). High levels of alexithymia at time of PTCA may be predictors of poorer physical status at 6 months.
