Dielectric absorption studies of a variety
\nof polar solutes containing rotatable groups and of
\nsome analogous rigid molecules dispersed in (i) an
\natactic polystyrene matrix, (ii) glassy o-terphenyl
\nand polyphenyl ether have been carried out. Sample
\npreparations and the dielectric measurements using
\nGeneral Radio 1615-A and 1621 capacitance bridges with
\nappropriate temperature-controllable cells have been
\ndescribed. The glass transition temperature measurements
\nusing the Glass Transition Temperature Measurement
\nApparatus have also been described. The experimental
\ndata as a function of frequency at different temperatures
\nwere subject to analysis by a series of computer programmes
\nwritten in APL language. The activation energy barriers
\nopposing the dielectric relaxation processes were obtained
\nby the application of the Eyring rate equation.
\nDifferent types of polar rigid molecules have
\nbeen studied mainly to provide sources of relaxation data
\nand activation parameters in the three media for comparison
\nwith those of flexible molecules of analogous size.
\nThe results of these rigid molecules have been used
\nto obtain a correlation between enthalpy and entropy of
\nactivation; enthalpy of activation and volume needed
\nfor the reorientation of the rigid molecules. The
\nactivation parameters for the rigid molecules were found
\nto depend on the nature of the solvent.
