I dizionari bilingui sono gli strumenti per eccellenza della mediazione culturale e della rappresentazione, come in uno specchio, di noi stessi e dell’alterità linguistica. Lo spazio riservato all’onomastica nei dizionari bilingui è quindi un indice importante del loro contenuto culturale e ideologico. Nel caso specifico della toponomastica, la conoscenza veicolata è soprattutto geografica ma l’importanza data a certi toponimi piuttosto che ad altri raffigura metaforicamente l’apertura o la chiusura del dizionario agli spazi dei loro referenti nella realtà. Qual è lo stato di questa conoscenza nel panorama attuale dei dizionari bilingui francese-italiano? In quale spazio concettuale si situa la toponomastica in questi dizionari? Che immagine della geografia del mondo francofono divulgano ? L’articolo dà delle risposte a queste domande con un esame meticoloso dei dizionari francese-italiano, con un’attenzione particolare per le relazioni problematiche tra il francese di Francia ed i francesi “d’altrove” e in particolare il francese del Quebec.
