1997년 6월 11일 韓國電力株式會社는 에디슨 전기협회(Edison Electric Institute)로부터 에디슨 大賞(Edison Award)을 수상했다. Edison 전기협회는 1933년 미국 電氣事業者협회로 설립되어 현재 246개 정규회원사와 72개 준회원사를 거느리고 있는 협회로서 전력사업에 관한 최선정보의 제공, 전력사업 전문서적 발간, 전력사업에 관한 자문 및 조사연구, 워크 샵 (work shop), 전문교육 등 사업을 수행하고 있는 기구이다. 에디슨 전기협회는 또한 전력산업 발전에 크게 기여한 전력회사를 선정하여 Edison 大賞과 6개부문 특별상을 1984년 이래 매년 수여하고 있다. 에디슨 전기협회는 1996년도의 업적을 평가하여 韓國電力公社의 發電運營실적(원자력 평균이용율 88%달성), 技術自立度(원자력 기술 자립 95%달성), 해외전력시장 진출(필리핀, 중국, 베트남, 인도, 터키 등에 기술 수출), 중소기업 지원(133백만달러 기술지원자금 제공), 사업다각화(光cable 9,430km, cable TV 망 25,530km 보유) 등을 현저한 공로로 인정 1997년도 수상 회사로 선정 했다고 밝혔다. 1997년도의 受賞候補로는 일본의 東京전력, 카나다의 온타리오 水力(Ontario Hydroelectric)등 막강한 경쟁자들이 있었으나 한전은 아시아 회사로는 처음으로 이 상을 수상한 것이다. 성수대교나 삼풍백화점 등 대형사고로 악명이 높은 한국이 安全과 품질관리가 無眉의 重大事인 원자력 발전 분야에서 세계 정상을 인정받았다는 사실은 학문적 탐구의 對象이 될만하다.
