Ce mémoire propose une étude du roman À la mémoire d’un héros d’Andrée Maillet (1921-1995) avec les outils théoriques et méthodologiques propres à la critique génétique. En plus de renouveler le discours sur un roman publié en 1975, mais à peu près oublié par l’histoire littéraire du Québec, ce mémoire convoque des outils génétiques peu communs. Le premier chapitre est consacré à la présentation et à l’« analyse matérielle » (Grésillon, 2008) des états successifs du dossier génétique du roman afin d’identifier et de décrire les états rédactionnels, mais aussi d’établir la chronologie de la genèse. Cette vue d’ensemble du dossier permet de dégager deux phases particulières de la genèse : l’entrée en écriture et la genèse post-éditoriale. Le second chapitre traite de l’entrée en écriture du roman et repose sur l’analyse de la méthode et des stratégies employées par l’écrivaine pour la rédaction des premiers états génétiques du dossier : le cahier inédit intitulé Choses écrites et les premiers états manuscrits. L’étude de ces états permet d’identifier les principaux enjeux de l’entrée en écriture. La fin du parcours génétique, c’est-à-dire la phase génétique post-éditoriale, fait l’objet du troisième chapitre. L’étude d’un exemplaire annoté par Maillet et de fragments textuels rédigés en vue d’une réédition permet d’identifier différents « facteurs de réécriture post-éditoriale » (Mahrer, 2017) qui marquent une phase génétique où l’édition du roman de 1975 constitue, pour ainsi dire, un « brouillon, en attente de réécriture » (Mahrer, 2017).
