Notre etude fait l'analyse des traductions que Baudelaire a faites des oeuvres de Edgar Allan Poe, a la lumiere de quelques theories du vingtieme siecle sur le bien-traduire. Lorsque Baudelaire traduisait Poe, il a anticipe non seulement les procedes de traduction que proposent Vinay et Darbelnet, mais aussi les techniques de plusieurs theoriciens modernes, tels que Nida, Newmark et Wilss. Baudelaire est un traducteur en avant de son temps qui a anticipe les grands courants de la traduction moderne. En traduisant Poe, Baudelaire a fait un usage intuitif des divers procedes de la traduction directe (la traduction litterale, l'emprunt et le calque) et de la traduction oblique (la transposition, la modulation, l'equivalence et l'adaptation) que proposeront Vinay et Darbelnet plus d'un siecle plus tard. De plus, il a fait un grand effort pour susciter, chez son lecteur, une reaction equivalente a celle du lecteur du texte original en reproduisant fidelement les titres qui donnent a penser, les neologismes, le lexique, les figures de style, les sociolectes et les jeux de mots de Poe. Bref, il produit une traduction semantique telle que proposeront Nida et Newmark plus de 100 ans plus tard. Baudelaire a aussi apporte certaines ameliorations a son texte lorsque le texte de Poe faisait defaut; ce qui annonce certaines observations que fera Newmark. Baudelaire est un excellent traducteur qui fait parfois des pertes, souvent des gains, et rarement des fautes. Il nous offre une version fidele aux oeuvres de Poe ou la qualite de la langue d'arrivee est souvent superieure a celle de la langue de depart.
