A crescente utilização de piscinas públicas é uma prática saudável mas que pode ter riscos para a saúde humana, apesar da qualidade microbiológica e química da água ser monitorizada regularmente e a sua desinfeção ser obrigatória. Neste estudo compararam-se quatro sistemas de desinfeção de água de piscinas públicas, cloro, bromo, ozono e UV. Procedeu-se a uma revisão bibliográfica sobre as principais características e efeitos secundários de cada um dos sistemas, incluindo valores paramétricos de concentração de desinfetante, eficiência de desinfeção, formação de subprodutos resultantes da desinfeção com agentes químicos e potenciais efeitos na saúde humana. Compararam-se os resultados de análises de amostras de água, de 2010 a 2012, de piscinas da região da grande Lisboa e Oeste que utilizam os referidos métodos. O baixo número de amostras de água desinfetada com bromo e com ozono apenas permitiu a comparação de sistemas de desinfeção com cloro e sistemas UV complementados com halogéneo residual. Verificou-se que o sistema de radiação UV e halogéneo residual é mais eficaz de acordo com a literatura consultada. Este método reduz os riscos da exposição a subprodutos de desinfeção quando comparado com os da utilização de cloro.
