Abstract
Í ritgerð þessari er farið yfir sögu Félagsheimilis Kópavogs í tímaröð, frá upphafsárum þess til ársins 2022, þegar umræðan um hugsanleg niðurrif stóðu yfir. Borin verða saman félagsheimili í öðrum þéttbýlum og hvað einkennir þau. Tekin verða sem dæmi félagsheimilið á Seltjarnarnesi, sem er lítið en þéttbýlt sveitarfélag – ólíkt Kópavogi að mörgu leyti. Hvað var öðruvísi gert þar? Einnig verður skoðað uppbygging félagsheimilis fyrir Íslendingafélagið í Winnipeg í Kanada. Hvað fór úrskeiðis við undirbúning byggingu þess og hver er staðan í dag? \n \nNúna er framtíð hússins í óvissu. Það hafa verið umræður um að rífa niður húsið, en það stendur þó enn þegar þetta er skrifað. Húsið sjálft er þó ekki viðfangsefni ritgerðarinnar, heldur sú menningarstarfsemi sem átti sér stað innan veggja þess. Megin inntak ritgerðarinnar er að vekja athygli á samheldnu átaki íbúa Kópavogs við byggingu hússins, blómlegu menningarlífi og gerð tilraun til að útskýra hvað olli því að þörfin fyrir húsnæðinu dvínaði með tímanum. Hvað varð til þess að húsið stendur í dag autt og yfirgefið? Á það afturkvæmt sem máttarstólpi menningarlífs í Kópavogi eða lýkur sögunni hér? Þetta er saga af þorpi að breytast í bæ – og saga af húsnæði að glata tilgangi sínum.
