Cette thèse s’est fixée pour objectif de saisir une œuvre littéraire depuis le point de vue de la philosophie en étudiant, dans les nouvelles de l’écrivain américain H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937), les différents degrés de discours portant à la fois sur les mécanismes de la conscience, sur les conditions de constitution, et les limites, du sujet connaissant, ainsi que sur les modalités de crise de la liaison de ce sujet au monde. Une telle étude est menée principalement depuis les perspectives ouvertes par la phénoménologie anthropologisée du philosophe allemand Hans Blumenberg (1920-1996), et prend également appui sur certains aspects de la philosophie transcendantale (Kant), de la phénoménologie (Husserl) et de la philosophie des formes symboliques (Cassirer), qui sont les outils principaux de Blumenberg pour l’usage que nous en faisons. Le geste herméneutique de la thèse veut établir la présence d’un sujet lovecraftien et sa spécificité (Partie I) ; sujet qui se définit par les différents degrés de son état de crise : crise des conditions de vérifiabilité par le sujet lui-même du fonctionnement de sa conscience saisie comme « structure de performance » du monde, crise du « concept de réalité » garantissant la certitude de la réalité de ce monde et, enfin, crise de la possibilité des conditions de liaison du sujet au « monde vivant » (Partie II) ; pour enfin examiner les trois issues possibles à cette crise et proposer l’identification, au cœur du texte lovecraftien, du discours d’une ontologie de la volonté dans le motif du cas du sujet persistant (Partie III).
