Abstract
L’architettura autoctona o vernacolare comprende tutti quegli edifici che sono stati costruiti tramite l’impiego di materiali e forme tradizionali da operatori che non avevano studiato architettura nel senso formale del termine. Gli edifici costruiti da muratori anonimi costituiscono l’esempio più chiaro di questa forma validissima dell’architettura (Juvanec 1998). La storia dell’architettura com’è scritta e insegnata nel mondo occidentale tende a privilegiare solo poche culture specifiche e pochi rami dello sviluppo della conoscenza della materia da parte dell’uomo durante i secoli (Rudofsky 1964). L’enfasi sui nomi d’architetti e di mecenati e sui loro grandi edifici ha oscurato i talenti e le scoperte di costruttori anonimi, di cui alcuni concetti erano quasi utopistici. Purtroppo la bellezza di questa architettura è stata definita come casuale, ma dovrebbe essere considerata come il risultato di ottimizzazione di quel poco che era a disposizione in una certa epoca ed in un determinato luogo. La permanenza delle forme e delle tecniche, trasmesse di generazione in generazione, ha una validità perenne perché conferisce all’architettura quella umanità che purtroppo manca in tanti edifici moderni. Inoltre, studi contemporanei mostrano chiaramente la validità delle tecniche tradizionali autoctone, anche nella costruzione contemporanea, e provano che lo studio attento di questi edifici poveri può contribuire al risparmio energetico nella vita odierna in edifici moderni ossia allo sviluppo sostenibile (Fathy 1986).
