L’économie montréalaise a connu de profondes mutations ces dernières années, comme
\nbeaucoup d’autres villes nord-américaines. Elle accuse cependant depuis une vingtaine
\nd’années une croissance plus lente que les autres métropoles canadiennes. Il en est de
\nmême pour son activité aérienne : elle ralentit au courant des années 1980, alors qu’elle
\nconnaît quelques années plus tôt une période de gloire, encore difficile à oublier. Ce
\nralentissement est souvent attribué au dédoublement du site aéroportuaire, avec la
\nconstruction de l’aéroport international Montréal-Mirabel. Mais qu’en est-il
\nexactement ? L’étude constate qu’une combinaison de facteurs explique cette perte de
\nvitesse de l’activité aérienne montréalaise.
\nEn premier lieu, le progrès technologique des avions en 1960 renverse la position de
\nMontréal : les appareils ayant un rayon d’action supérieur, les compagnies aériennes
\nréorganisent leurs réseaux aériens, délaissant Montréal au profit de Toronto qui a une
\nlocalisation plus centrale pour se connecter aux autres villes nord-américaines. La
\npolitique aérienne s’adapte donc quelques années plus tard, au courant des années
\n1970 : Montréal ne bénéficie plus de protectionnisme politique. Le dédoublement du
\nsite aéroportuaire avec la construction d’un deuxième aéroport à Mirabel, sans
\nconnexion, exacerbe alors ce ralentissement.
\nAussi, le déplacement des activités économiques vers l’ouest du pays, amorcé dans les
\nannées 1970, incite d’autant plus les transporteurs à centrer leurs réseaux à Toronto,
\naccentuant l’affaiblissement de l’activité aérienne de Montréal. Parallèlement,
\nl’industrie du transport aérien connaît une profonde mutation, au début des années 1980,
\ncaractérisée par une restructuration du réseau aérien nord-américain. Montréal se trouve
\nà nouveau écartée du réseau car elle n’est plus au centre de gravité des activités
\néconomiques, et donc du réseau aérien.
