Abstract
Cette thèse examine les pratiques théâtrales de l’ancien premier ministre du Québec, Félix-Gabriel Marchand (1832-1900) qui connaissent un grand succès au Québec à la fin du XIXe siècle. Malgré cette réussite, l’auteur dramatique Marchand et son œuvre n’ont pas fait, jusqu’à présent, l’objet d’une étude approfondie. Cette thèse a pour objectif de combler cette lacune et de mettre également en lumière différentes pratiques théâtrales en vigueur à cette époque comme le théâtre de société, le théâtre en région et dans les grandes villes. Elle vise à répondre aux questions suivantes : dans quelles occasions et par qui les pièces de Marchand sont-elles représentées ? Qui est le spectateur et le lecteur de l’œuvre de Marchand au XIXe siècle ? Quelle est la réception de son théâtre de son vivant ? Pour répondre à ces questions, cette thèse adopte une approche historique et met en dialogue des sources privées (le journal intime et les lettres familiales) et publiques (les articles de journaux). Elle se sert aussi des théories historiques (Thomas Postlewait), épistolaires (Brigitte Diaz, Jelena Jovicic) et sociologiques (la théorie du discours social de Marc Angenot).
