Abstract
El inicio del siglo XXI emergió con un constante descubrimiento de complejos escándalos financieros en algunas de las empresas más importantes de su mercado. Su efecto no fue otro que la pérdida de la confianza general en la información financiera, generando a su paso un descrédito aún mayor de la profesión que verifica la transparencia y exactitud de las cuentas anuales, la auditoría de cuentas. Con ánimo de aminorar ese efecto, los grandes organismos mundiales junto con los legisladores emprendieron una incesante carrera de cambios legislativos en la búsqueda de recuperar esa seguridad, priorizando, para ello, el fortalecimiento de la figura de la independencia del auditor. Multitud de cambios en las prohibiciones y salvaguardas a la independencia han tenido lugar durante estos años, teniendo todas ellas como común denominador el logro de una armonización normativa a nivel europeo. Si bien la situación es preferible a la precedente, no será la definitiva, puesto que la complejidad cada vez mayor del mercado hace imprescindible la concurrencia de acciones dinámicas que eviten que el mal desempeño de la actividad por un sujeto, desprestigie a toda una profesión.
