L objet de l étude porte sur la pensée de Charles Taylor et, plus précisément, sur la comparaison que cet auteur trace entre la modernité (occidentale) et la religion (chrétienne). Le philosophe rapporte les conditions actuelles de la moralité et de la vie spirituelle sous les traits de ce monde qu il dénomme âge séculier . Sa préoccupation est celle d expliquer les raisons d un déclin répandu de la croyance religieuse au cours de la modernité : une contestation inédite de la foi qu il impute à une radicale évolution de la sensibilité humaine. Taylor accueillit la catégorie de sécularisation, tout en offrant une resémantisation substantielle. Loin de coïncider avec une poussée linéaire et irrésistible de dissolution de la spiritualité, ce phénomène serait, plus profondément, la racine du profil kaléidoscopique et fragmenté de notre univers moral. La première partie de la recherche reconstruit les développements de l humanisme exclusif : d une vocation spécifiquement moderne à une réalisation humaine complètement ancrée à l immanence. La seconde partie essaie de situer la position taylorienne dans le débat sur la modernité. La lecture diagnostique des ambigüités de cette formation identitaire (le fait de combiner des promesses grandioses à des menaces aussi importantes et inédites) s associe chez le Canadien à l effort de récupérer le sens original de ses références axiologiques. Dans une troisième partie, l étude discute l invocation de la part du québécois d un appui religieux aux engagements modernes. L investigation se conclue par la suggestion taylorienne d une intégration persistante entre le christianisme et la culture occidentale moderne.
