Els treballs realitzats a Sant Martí de les Tombetes (Sant Esteve de la Sarga, Pallars Jussà) s’engloben dins del projecte d’investigació L’ocupació humana a la vall de Sant Esteve de la Sarga (segles V-XI): els seus efectes sobre el paisatge. \nL’any 2001-2002 es van dur a terme la quarta i la cinquena campanya, per tal de finalitzar l’excavació dels sectors corresponents a la necròpolis (200a), l’excavació final de les tombes 15, 17 i 20, a més a més, d’exhaurir definitivament l’estratigrafia de la zona est, la més propera a l’església. És va prosseguir la intervenció en el sector del poblat (300), i és va obrir una nova àrea arqueològica en la primera terrassa del poblat (sector 300a), i un petit sondeig en la segona terrassa (300b). A banda dels treball d’excavació en extensió es va realitzar la prospecció dels entorns del jaciment per tal de localitzar noves àrees d’intervenció arqueològica, veient que el jaciment s’estenia cap a la vessant sud.\nEls treballs van constatar la presència de diversos elements estructurals, presumiblement associats a construccions que degueren ser utilitzades per la comunitat humana que ocupà el puig de Sant Martí de les Tombetes\nLa cultura material documentada va ser força abundant, ja que tots els nivells arqueològics van proporcionar materials mobles, principalment fragments de ceràmica, vidre, sílex, ferro, fauna i escòria de ferro, i material constructiu
