Ce mémoire porte sur les liens entre le lieu de travail et le lieu de résidence à Montréal en 1919. Nous avons cherché à savoir s'il y avait une différence dans la mobilité quotidienne de la main-d'œuvre industrielles selon la classe sociale, le genre ou l'origine ethnique. Le jumelage d'un ensemble de sources nous a permis de construire une base de données en recourant aux systèmes d'information géographique. La main-d’œuvre de deux entreprises (l'entreprise métallurgique Darling Brothers et la filature Sainte-Anne de la Dominion Textile) a été finement étudiée afin d'obtenir un portait somme toute complet des employés qui y travaillent. Des disparités salariales liées à l'origine ethnique et au genre ont émergé à travers cette analyse. Si quelques travailleurs utilisent la marche pour parcourir la distance entre le lieu de résidence et le lieu de travail, nos recherches portent à croire que le moyen de transport privilégié est le tramway. Nous le constatons dans les distances à parcourir et dans les choix de lieu de résidence. Le modèle de répartition géographique des travailleurs en 1919 reprend les grandes lignes du réseau de tramways montréalais. En plus du portait de la géographie résidentielle de la métropole que nous avons désiré dépeindre, nous avons également souhaité démontrer comment les SIG-historique peuvent nourrir la recherche historique.
