Cette recherche porte sur les apports des outils informatisés de construction de cartes conceptuelles à la compréhension de textes dans un contexte de formation universitaire virtuelle . Notre cadre théorique constitue une analyse conceptuelle de la notion de médiation des outils cognitifs dans l apprentissage dans les recherches réalisées dans l approche instrumentale de Vygotski. Nous développons le concept de médiation pragmatique et d habileté cognitive à la lumière de la théorie de Rabardel (1995) et celle de Piaget. Pour concevoir les médiations épistémiques, nous réalisons une analyse développementale du concept de médiation dans la théorie de Vygotski. Cette analyse démontre la cohérence interne de sa théorie matérialiste et dialectique de la médiation de la conscience et l importance de son hypothèse du langage intérieur. Pour décrire les médiations épistémiques nous mettons à contribution les propositions de Piaget et de Vygotski concernant l acte de conceptualisation. Nous mettons à l épreuve nos propositions théoriques et méthodologiques dans une étude microgénétique de construction de cartes conceptuelles avec le logiciel MOT par les étudiants d un cours dispensé par l internet à la Télé-université (Montréal). Le recueil de données consiste en enregistrement vidéo de l activité et en verbalisation consécutive. Nous mettons en évidence les transformations de la structure de l activité externe et de l activité interne induites par cet outil, les difficultés des étudiants à restructurer les significations immédiates et la dialectique entre les formes et les contenus des significations des mots du texte et des propriétés représentationnelles de l outil
