In Peril, In Prospect Throughout, I test these topics with a notion borrowed from MIT physicist Max Tegmark that matter, energy, and mind are all strongly related.I realize that modern society has, sadly, reduced the potentials of each one of these.I find that his three basic notions and the ancient art of Qigong seem to line up, and all three can help us improve healthcare and medicine.This book explores the health of all humans, sick or well, including all caregivers who support our health.Modern medicine largely focuses on disease and trauma.We need these resources, certainly, but what if healthcare were primarily based on assets, not deficits?A sick or injured person still has resources.How may these be supported, recruited, and honored?When a patient is considered only "a patient" or "a case," he or she is reduced to the material body.Health is the condition of wellness, we usually say, often thinking of individual people.We think of wholeness, vigor of mind and body, and the absence of illness.We may extend these ideas to include the healing assets of persons, communities, and the entire earth-all contexts for health.As wonderful as modern medicine is, it is still largely materials-based.It could be extended, improved, and be more effective if it drew on the resources of mind and energy in both caregivers and patients, indeed in all persons sick or well.Modern physics, furthermore, sees close connections between matter, mind, and energy.Drawing on mind and energy would have benefits: people would stay well longer, heal faster when injured or ill, have shorter hospital stays, and, when their lives come to an end, die in a more healthy manner.Furthermore, energy and mind have roles in wider contexts for health: social values, communities, public health, and the environment.Our reduction of "energy" to carbon sources (coal, gas, oil) have been a driver for Climate Change that will dramatically impact the health of all humans, all living creatures, and the earth itself.Personal energy is often reduced to efficient performance at work, in sports, etc.In a massage workshop, cell biologist James L. Oschman suggested that "all medicine is energy medicine," but we specialize in surgery (mechanical energy) and drugs (chemical energy) and ignore wider concepts of energy.
