Abstract
Background: Anxiety symptoms are one of the\nmore frequent mental health related issues prevalent\non the Mexican population. College students\nare at risk of developing anxiety symptoms because\nof the challenges related to starting college studies\nand pursuing a college degree. Objective: Levels of\nanxiety symptoms in a sample of college students\nwere assessed to examine their prevalence among\nthe different university school programs. Participants:\n270 college students at the National Autonomus\nUniversity of Mexico, FES Iztacala, Faculty of\nHealth Sciences. Method: Beck Anxiety Inventory\nwas completed by the balanced sample at University\ncampus. Results: Almost one quarter of the\npopulation has symptoms of anxiety above the cut\npoint. Female students showed to be more anxious\nthan male students. Younger students showed higher\nprevalence of anxiety symptoms. Conclusions:\nFindings provide evidence that females may be at a\nhigher risk of developing anxiety symptoms, which\ncould impact their academic performance. Likewise,\nthe youngest students are an area of opportunity\nto be detected and channeled to specialized services\non campus.
