L’articolo si inserisce nell’ampio dibattito storiografico sul tema dell’emigrazione italiana di inizio ‘900, discostandosi tuttavia dal filone principale riguardante l’esodo verso gli USA. La ricerca offre degli spunti per un approfondimento degli aspetti storico-economici sul primo fenomeno migratorio in Canada, quando iniziano a crearsi le prime comunità su cui andranno ad inserirsi i più intensi flussi migratori dei decenni successivi. Utilizzando come fonti la principale storiografia sull’argomento – sviluppatasi soprattutto nell’ambito del progetto di “multiculturalismo” – e la documentazione archivistica raccolta presso il Servizio Emigrati dell’Archivio Storico del Banco di Napoli, si ripercorrono le principali tappe e caratteristiche del fenomeno emigratorio in Canada, mettendo a fuoco le problematiche sociali ed occupazionali della comunità italiana insediata nel territorio e analizzando l’andamento delle rimesse raccolte dagli emigranti ed inviate verso i territori d’origine. Con l’ausilio di un’appendice corredata di numerose tabelle, viene approfondita inoltre l’attività dei corrispondenti del Banco di Napoli in Canada, le questioni relative alla gestione e all’organizzazione dell’attività di raccolta, i problemi legati alla concorrenza fra istituti, ma anche la crescita di attività economiche sul nuovo territorio.
