Quotation and Form in Two Chanson-Masses by Orlando di Lasso
Bibliographic record
Abstract
This study presents analyses of two imitation masses by Orlando di Lasso. The following two pairs of research questions are addressed: 1) How does Lasso quote nonimitative models? What quotation types, i.e., techniques of quotation, are employed?;2) Can generalizations be made about the use of each of the quotation types?Do the quotation types each have formal associations or implications? While focusing on Lasso's treatment of nonimitative models and on the role of quotation in articulating form, the study aims to improve scholarly understanding of Lasso's imitation technique as a whole. The two masses have been selected because their models, Claudin de Sermisy's Il me suffit and Pierre Sandrin's Doulce Memoire, employ similar nonimitative textures and are unified by genre and affect. This study is organized into six chapters.Chapter 1 summarizes historical sources on imitation masses and recent scholarship on Lasso's imitation technique, outlines this study's contributions to this scholarship, and presents the analytical methodology employed.Chapter 2 analyzes the two models, focusing on their similarities and differences in textures, contrapuntal techniques, and form.Chapter 3 proposes a taxonomy of quotation types, defining two categories of quotation (soggetto and polyphonic block) and eight quotation types within them, as well as techniques of alteration of quotations.Chapters 4-5 present analyses of the two masses, and Chapter 6 summarizes this study's findings.Among major findings, this study concludes that 1) while individual quotation types possess some degree of formal associations, a given quotation type can have several varied uses, depending on its formal role; 2) the use of quotations differs between the Kyrie, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei on one hand, and the Gloria and Credo on the other hand, as well as within the former group; 3) despite the stylistic similarity of the two models, the frequency of occurrence of specific quotation types differs significantly between the two masses.iv Rsum Cette tude prsente des analyses de deux messes d'imitation de Roland de Lassus.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one teacher head, not a consensus.
