Unas palabras de Edward Said, escritas como prólogo en 2003 para una reedición de Orientalism (1978), nos pueden ser útiles para entender el tono y la actitud desde la que Nil Santiáñez se enfrenta con el problema del tratamiento y manipulación del espacio por parte del fascismo español.El título, que pudiera parecer en primera instancia algo abstruso, adquiere nueva vida bajo el paraguas del crítico palestino: «My idea in Orientalism is to use humanistic critique to open up the fields of struggle, to introduce a longer sequence of thought and analysis to replace the short bursts of polemical, thought-stopping fury that so imprison us in labels and antagonistic debate whose goal is a belligerent collective identity rather than understanding and intellectual exchange».A partir de conceptos similares, la exposición de Santiáñez se plantea como un espacio de pensamiento en torno a los procesos y las prácticas culturales del imaginario colonial hispano sobre el espacio simbólico del territorio.Santiáñez explora la escritura fascista española como documento que le permite analizar el despliegue de una política relativamente coherente, que alcanzó su punto álgido con la dictadura franquista.Así, a través de ensayos, discursos, artículos, materiales de propaganda, poemas, novelas y memorias, muestra con todo lujo de detalles cómo se manipula la concepción del espacio desde los años Veinte hasta finales de los años Cincuenta.Santiáñez opina que el fascismo se expresó en términos espaciales en tres frentes diferentes: el Protectorado español de Marruecos donde los fascistas se forjaron como grupo durante la guerra del Rif (1921-27); en la recreación de tres mitos del espacio: Castilla, Roma, y el imperio; y en la escritura fascista sobre la ciudad.El primer capítulo se focaliza en conceptos relacionados con el espacio a partir de los escritos teóricos fascistas.Dividido en tres secciones (Mapping, Planning, Ordering), parte de una comparación entre los casos de Alemania, Italia y España para deducir cómo se articularon tres nociones de espacio: absoluto, relativo y relacional.En el caso español se fundamenta en el análisis de tres textos de Ernesto Giménez Caballero, Genio de España (1932), Arte y Estado (1935) y Roma madre (1939).Algunos de los
