Abstract
Studio One Receives 24 Journalism Awards The University of North Dakota’s live television show, Studio One, received 24 awards in recent competitions sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists, the Northwest Broadcast News Association and the North Dakota Professional Communicators. Stories from the 2010-2011 academic year were submitted for the contests. “It’s great to see students receive recognition for their hard work and skill,” explains News Director Stephanie Flyger. Every week, students at the University of North Dakota produce Studio One. The television show is similar to morning network shows, with feature, news, sports and weather segments. Interns are involved with every facet of producing the program. Students shoot video, write stories, design graphics, produce guest segments and edit footage. Studio One has a rich history on the University of North Dakota campus. The show first debuted on February 5, 1987. Since it began, more than 700 students have worked with the program. The project has received more than 560 awards from various professional organizations that sponsor communication contests. The show can be seen in markets across the Midwest and into southern Manitoba, Canada. Members of the campus community can watch the show on Cable Channel 3 & 17 every Thursday at 5 p.m. or online. Despite recent recognition, UND Television Center staff members say that awards are not the main focus of the show. However, staff members are proud that students have the opportunity to leave campus as award-winning writers and photographers from a nationally recognized program.
