Il y a très peu de recherches disponibles qui portent sur les taux alarmants de détresse des étudiants sur les campus postsecondaires canadiens et les approches artistiques en matière de santé et de bien-être des étudiants. La présente étude est une étude sur le problème croissant de la détresse et du suicide chez les élèves et un examen de la façon dont l’utilisation des soutiens axés sur les arts a apporté un changement pour améliorer le bien-être. Avec des centres de counseling surchargés et peu de ressources pour fournir des formes de soutien diversifiées et accessibles, il n’est pas surprenant que la plus récente Évaluation nationale de la santé des collèges (NCHA, 2019) - Le Canada communique qu’au cours de la dernière année, plus de la moitié (51,6 %) d’environ cinquante-cinq mille étudiants interrogés « se sentaient tellement déprimés qu’il était difficile de fonctionner » et environ 70 % « ressentaient une anxiété écrasante ». Une multitude de disciplines étudient les effets des approches axées sur les arts sur la santé et le bien-être et révèlent que l’activité artistique facilite à la fois le traitement des émotions et des pensées et apaisant le système nerveux en s’engageant dans le processus créatif. Les initiatives artistiques communautaires sont également citées comme favorisant l’autorégulation, la découverte de soi, l’auto-efficacité et la guérison grâce à un engagement envers l’inclusion sociale.
