L'objectif global du GRAMS en lien avec le projet est entre autres de participer, avec ses convertisseurs photon-numérique 3D (Photon-to-Digital Converter (PDC)), à l'expérience nEXO. C'est une expérience qui vise à détecter la désintégration de type double bêta sans neutrino afin de confirmer l'hypothèse selon laquelle les neutrinos seraient des particules de Majonara. Le projet de maîtrise consiste à concevoir, implémenter ainsi que tester un système de caractérisation de photodiodes à avalanche monophotoniques (single photon avalanche diode - SPAD) conçues par le Groupe de Recherche en Appareillage Médical de Sherbrooke (GRAMS). Le système est composé de plusieurs bancs de test permettant d'effectuer les mesures nécessaires à l'extraction des caractéristiques principales des photodiodes. Le système doit permettre la caractérisation de ces dispositifs opérés en mode Geiger, et ce, sur gaufre de silicium de façon automatique. Le présent document fait une revue de l'état de l'art sur les caractéristiques et les méthodes de caractérisation des photodiodes avalanches à photon unique afin de permettre la conception de bancs de test en vue de répondre à la question suivante: Comment caractériser un grand nombre de SPAD opérés en mode Geiger sur une gaufre de silicium en vue d'accélérer le processus de recherche et développement ainsi que la production de Photon-to-Digital Converters intégrés en 3 dimensions? Le système conçu consiste principalement en l'intégration d'une carte à pointe active avec une station sous pointes semi-automatique, d'une séquence de contrôle et d'un système d'enregistrement et de gestion des données. Les tests d'intégrations ont prouvé la validité du concept, mais ont également soulevé plusieurs problèmes par rapport aux lacunes du contrôle de l'environnement et des conditions de test. Grâce à l'automatisation de plusieurs manipulations, le banc de test produit permet d'augmenter tout de même la capacité de caractérisation des SPAD pour le GRAMS afin de faciliter et accélérer l'élaboration de solutions pour des Photon-to-Digital Converters.
