L'ensemble des contributions de ce numéro résume la réflexion d'un groupe réunissant, à l'Université Laval de Québec, des chercheurs d'horizons divers, en vue d'ouvrir des perspectives d'exploration du figement.Lorsqu'il est question du figement, plusieurs dizaines de termes, parmi lesquels on peut citer clichés, collocations, expressions figées, expressions idiomatiques, lexies complexes, locutions, mots complexes, mots composés, phrases figées, phrasèmes, phraséologismes, proverbes, séquences (verbales / nominales) figées, unités polylexicales (notamment Svensson 2004), sont utilisés pour désigner des phénomènes similaires.Ce foisonnement terminologique semble indiquer que le figement est un phénomène général, extrêmement répandu et structurant pour notre pratique du langage.Il est toutefois intéressant de constater que ces dénominations se focalisent essentiellement sur le figement en tant que résultat (= segment linguistique) d'un processus qu'on appelle aussi figement.Envisager le figement à l'aune des séquences figées seulement c'est oublier que le processus est permanent, sous-jacent et productif.Pour décrire ce processus, il faut envisager à la fois ses dimensions syntaxiques, morphologiques, sémantiques et pragmatiques.En repartant de données primaires et de leur observation, sans parti pris théorique, les articles publiés dans ce numéro visent à alimenter la réflexion sur ces différents plans.Ce numéro ne tente donc pas d'unifier la terminologie du figement, ni de discuter des tests généralement utilisés pour l'identifier et le quantifier.Il ne cherche pas non plus à justifier ou à critiquer l'un ou l'autre courant théorique qui ont abordé la question du figement.Il vise surtout à soulever de nouvelles questions et à explorer d'autres pistes.
