Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

In Quebec, the production of organic waste (urban, agri-food and agro-industrial) is estimated at about 13 million tons per year. In order to recycle these organic residues, various recovery methods are available, such as anaerobic digestion. Increasing implementation of new biogas plants leads to a significant rise in the production of digestate that must be valorized. This research project aims to develop a new valorization pathway for biogas digestates that is also a solution to reduce the cost of the diet used in the rearing of edible insects, in this case the black soldier fly larvae (BSFL). First, a preliminary study was conducted to analyze the nutritive potential of digestate for BSFL. Enzymatic hydrolysis was applied to the digestate in order to degrade fibers into reducing sugars and improve the assimilation of the substrate by the larvae. The application of this pretreatment resulted in improved mass gain and bioconversion rate. However, the growth of BSFL on pretreated digestate remains low compared to the standard diet and further work is needed to optimize the process. In a second step, the integration of pre-treated agricultural residues to improve the performance of BSFL reared on digestate was tested. Pretreatments, either thermal hydrolysis and/or enzymatic hydrolysis, were applied to maize residues and alfalfa to improve nutrient bioavailability. Subsequently, different diets were developed by mixing the digestate with the pre-treated maize residue and alfalfa. Substrate characterization and bioconversion performance analyses by BSFL were performed. Application of the pretreatment to the agricultural crops resulted in higher mass gain by the larvae compared to the untreated maize residue and alfalfa. However, once pretreated agricultural substrates were mixed with digestate, performance decreased. Indeed, the growth of larvae reared on a digestate-based diet was very poor compared to the standard diet. A significant difference was found between the length gain of the two digestates, indicating that some digestates are more suitable than others for growing BSFL. Based on the results of this study, treatment of digestate with BSFL was not effective. Additional research is needed to achieve efficient growth of BSFL and to enable digestate valorization.
