Abstract
An investigation was carried out on the state of health and healthy index of male and female university students, especially those living in dormitories, evaluated from the extent to which the students have a healthy lifestyle. The subjects of the investigation were domitory students, namely 120 males (Canadians, foreigners in Japan, and Japanese) and 183 females (Canadians and Japanese). Moreover, 40 male students and 101 female students living at home and commuting to university were chosen to contrast the students in domitories. The results are as follows : 1. Over 50% of home-based students were found to have a health lifestyle, whereas both Canadian and Japanese male and female students who lived in domitories were found to be comparatively less so. 2. Canadian male and female domitory students were found to have the least balanced diet of all, followed by Japanese domitory students than foreigners in Japan. 3. In comparing Japanese and Canadian, male and female atudents, of 10 foodstuffs surveyed Japanese had the most balanced diet and had higher intake of eggs, fish, soybean and seaweed products, whereas Canadians had higher frequiencies of milk intake and taking exercise. Also, both Japanese male and female students had a higher healty lifestyle index. 4. In comparing male and female, in general male students had higher rates of both smorking and taking exercise, whereas female students often skipped breakfast and had a more unbalanced diet, it was also recognized that they tended to have high intakes of nutrients. 5. There was remarkable difference in subjective symptoms relating to the Todai Health Index (THI) between males and females in the group. 6. In an addition of the subjects' weight to items in the THI, a statistically meaningful interelationship was discovered between the calculated value and the subjects' lifestyle in both males and females, and each other was recognized. Apart from foreigners living in Japan there was recognized especially a statistically meaningful negative relationship between the calculated score and the healthy lifestyle index of the subject group.
