Tässä maisterintutkielmassa tarkastellaan luontoa ja ei-inhimillistä toimijuutta Samuel Beckettin näytelmässä Krapp's Last Tape (1958). Tutkimus analysoi, miten luonnon läsnäolo ja poissaolo rakentuvat näytelmässä, sekä millä tavoin ei-inhimilliset elementit, esimerkiksi teknologia, esineet ja hiljaisuus, vaikuttavat muistamiseen ja identiteettiin aktiivisina toimijoina. Teorialähtöinen lähiluku osoittaa, kuinka minimalistinen ja absurdi näytelmä heijastaa modernin ihmisen suhdetta itseensä, teknologiaan ja ympäröivään todellisuuteen. Beckettin näytelmä ei kuvaa luontoa tavanomaisesti eläiminä, kasveina ja maisemana, vaan se rakentuu ruumiillisuuden, hiljaisuuden, valon ja pimeyden sekä muistojen kautta. Luonnon poissaolo korostaa Krappin kokemaa eksistentiaalista tyhjyyttä. Myös materialla, erityisesti nauhurilla, on aktiivinen rooli muistin ja identiteetin rakentajana. Materian toimijuus on kuitenkin ristiriitaista: se mahdollistaa muistamisen, mutta samalla etäännyttää emotionaalisesti. Krapp muotoutuu kyborgiseksi hahmoksi, ihmisen ja koneen hybridiksi, mutta identiteetin eheyttämisen sijaan kyborgisuus vain rikkoo sitä. Tutkielma lähestyy Beckettin teosta yhdistämällä ekokriittisen, posthumanistisen ja uusmaterialistisen lukutavan. Ekokritiikki nostaa esiin luonnon poissaolon merkityksen, posthumanismi kyseenalaistaa ihmiskeskeisyyden sekä painottaa ei-inhimillisen roolia, ja uusmaterialismi korostaa materian ja esineiden aktiivista toimijuutta. Näytelmä piirtää kuvan moniulotteisesta maailmasta, jossa ihminen on osa jatkuvasti muotoutuvaa materiaalista ja teknologista verkostoa. Krapp's Last Tape ei ainoastaan kuvaa aikansa teknologista murrosta, vaan toimii myös ajankohtaisena varoituksena ihmisestä, joka on kadottamassa yhteytensä luontoon ja samalla ihmisyyteensä.
